GEST WOBEC FOTOGRAFII
Sympozjum performatywne
Zachęta - Narodowa Galeria Sztuki
pl. Małachowskiego 3, Warszawa
Koncepcja/organizacja: Krzysztof Pijarski
21 października, godz. 17 - 21
22 października, godz. 15 - 21
Celem sympozjum będzie zbadanie, opisanie, a przede wszystkim „pokazanie” wizualnych i praktycznych sposobów formułowania myśli; pokazanie pracy wyobraźni i umysłu krytycznego, wyrażających się w obrazach fotograficznych.
Aby pokazać wyobraźnię w działaniu, trzeba przełamać, a przynajmniej przekształcić konwencję tradycyjnej konferencji naukowej.
W ramach sympozjum Aneta Grzeszykowska i Jan Smaga porozmawiają o cyklu fotografii „Archiwum prywatne” z reżyserką, dramaturżką i teoretyczką teatru Igą Gańczarczyk. Elżbieta Janicka i Wojciech Wilczyk wdadzą się w dyskusję o swoim nowym projekcie, „Inne miasto”, z Waldemarem Baraniewskim, historykiem sztuki i znawcą spraw warszawskich. Michał Kaczyński i Łukasz Gorczyca wystąpią w roli twórców książki artystycznej, „d.o.m. polski” by poddać ją refleksji wespół z Pawłem Szypulskim, kolekcjonerem książek fotograficznych i kuratorem.
Wyniki sympozjum zostaną zaprezentowane w formie strony internetowej. W ten sposób nagrania spotkań zostaną udostępnione szerszej, w tym międzynarodowej, publiczności (filmy zostaną opatrzone podpisami w języku angielskim). Zgromadzonym materiałom będzie towarzyszyło kilka esejów, poddających refleksji założenia i efekty sympozjum, również w dwóch wersjach językowych. Na stronie głównej będzie można obejrzeć wspomniany „traktat o geście”.

GESTURE TOWARDS PHOTOGRAPHY A PERFORMATIVE SYMPOSIUM
Zachęta - National Gallery of Art
3 Małachowskiego Sq., Warsaw
Concept / organization: Krzysztof Pijarski
October 21, 5-9 p.m.
October 22, 3-9 p.m.
The main focus of the symposium will be to investigate, describe, and above all, to "demonstrate" the visual and practical ways of expressing thoughts; to "show" how the imagination and the critical mind work in terms of photographic images. Such a formula is based on the assumption that artists are the people who most effectively "think" in pictures and by means of pictures. Therefore, the artists will be here partners in the exchange of ideas, co-creators of the dialogue, and not just the subject of discourse.
To show the imagination in action, one has to break, or at least to transform, the convention of a traditional scientific conference. Hence the performative nature of the event, which is an attempt to move away from thinking of the event as a series of lectures but rather as the series of meetings, interactions. In place of a situation where the speaker, separated from the audience, shares his pre-produced knowledge, performative symposium proposes the meeting of several people - artists and theorists – to discuss about photographs in any format, books or contact sheets, “to discover /explore” them - for each other and for the gathered audience. The process of discovering /exploring the images will be carried out not only through a discussion, but essentially, via the exchange of gestures: an indication of a finger, juxtaposition, cropping, saving, outlining, etc. So the whole repertoire of responses to the images, which the body has at its disposal.
A key issue seems to be a scene design of such meetings: at a round table with loosely organized auditorium (seats arrangement will not be pre-determined). The meetings will be recorded by high-quality camera, placed vertically above the table. The camera will not be recording the faces of the "panel" participants but above all, their hands and photographs which they talk about. The image will be projected onto a detached screen positioned in the hall so that the gathered audience could not only listen to the voices of the participants, but also closely observe their gestures.
Under the symposium, Aneta Grzeszykowska and Jan Smaga will talk about the series of photographs "Private Archive"/ “Archiwum prywatne” with director, dramatist and theater theorist Iga Gańczarczyk. Elżbieta Janicka and Wojciech Wilczyk will get into a discussion about their new project: "The Other City" / “Inne miasto” with Waldemar Baraniewski, an art historian and expert on Warsaw. Michał Kaczyński and Łukasz Gorczyca will act as the creators of an artistic book, "Polish h.o.m.e" / “d.o.m polski” to subject it to contemplation together with Paweł Szypulski, a collector of photographic books and curator. The avant-garde director, dramatist and theorist Weronika Szczawińska will reflect deeply on a series of works "Dear colleagues" / “Koleżanki i koledzy” by Paweł Bownik in dialogue with the artist, while cultural theorist and philosopher Kuba Mikurda will talk with Nicolas Grospierre about his photographic objects
Of course, it’s not only about inventing a "new" formula of symposium – attractiveness is not its purpose. Rather, it results directly from the ways of formulating opinions by the invited artists; is designed both to extract a familiar aspect of our attitude towards images and to identify the modes of artistic production, which clearly emphasize the physical aspect of the photographic image and go beyond the conjugation of the eye (based on reflex) with the camera's shutter. "Thinking in picture" of the invited artists consists, among others, in that they extend "decisive moment" over the entire process of working on the image, so they are able to give their work an appropriate "density" - the density, which is not easily translated into the language of discourse
After the meeting, the recorded material will be edited to produce the movie – a specific "treatise" on gesture towards the image. The results of the symposium will be presented in the form of a website. Thus, the recordings of meetings will be available to a wider audience, including international one (movies will have English subtitles). Gathered materials will be accompanied by several essays, that subject the assumptions and results of the symposium to some reflections, also in two languages. On the home page it will be possible to watch the said "treatise on gesture."
